“Every normal human being (and not merely the 'artist') has an inexhaustible store of buried images in his subconscious, it is merely a matter of courage or liberating procedures ... of voyages into the unconscious, to bring pure and unadulterated found objects to light.” Max Ernst (Ernst, Turpin, & Stallabrass, 1993). My paintings are frequently more about the process and the application of paint rather than the finished outcome. Much of my work is derived from elements of mixed media sketchbook studies. These are usually created quite quickly which aids expressive spontaneity and a flow of the subconscious, derived completely from within, using methods to explore the subconscious. The use of line by mono-printing, adds a rawness to the paintings. The outcome cannot always be anticipated and the marks and smudges often left by this process add a naïve, brutish nature to the canvas. These compositions lie somewhere between the abstract and the figurative. To the viewer they may look like meaningless and unidentifiable scrawls and strange figurations, but to me, these images express that which is beyond articulation. “I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for.” - Georgia O'Keeffe (Goldsworthy, 2015).
